March 22, 2021
Dear Parents/Guardians of Welland Centennial:
The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test measures whether students are meeting the minimum standard for literacy across all subjects up to the end of Grade 9. Successful completion of the literacy test is one of the requirements to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
EQAO will be field testing a new online version of the OSSLT from March 2021 until June 2021. The OSSLT will be available to students in Grade 10, 11, and those in Grade 12 who will not be graduating this school year. If successful, this will count towards their literacy graduation requirement. Because the Ministry of Education has waived the literacy graduation requirement for all students graduating during the 2020–2021 school year, graduating students do not need to take the OSSLT field test.
Special accommodations for testing at the school will be made to ensure that Cohort O students have the opportunity to attempt the test. The school will be reaching out to Cohort O students to make these arrangements. The test cannot be completed at home, so those students in Cohort O must attend school on their scheduled day. In-person students will remain with their assigned cohorts and classes for testing. Testing will occur over a number of days between March and April. Please use the link below to access the schedule.
OSSLT Prep and Writing Schedule
Students in Cohort O will be receiving an additional email indicating the date that they are scheduled to come to the school to complete the OSSLT.
Centennial staff, in conjunction with our Literacy Team, are committed to helping our students prepare for the OSSLT. Over the course of the school year, all teachers have been incorporating literacy skills into their regular class program.
Starting the week of March 29th, each student will complete a day of preparation activities. These include reviewing the Snapshot practice literacy test they completed in the fall, lessons on how the test is structured and test-taking strategies, practicing using previous OSSLT questions, and getting comfortable with the new online test format. Cohort A and B students will complete the preparation activities in their scheduled class.
For our Cohort O students in Grade 10, there will be a live session for online help scheduled for Wednesday, March 31 from 10:00am – 2:00pm. A link to this MS Teams meeting will be posted in the Grade 10 course shell and in each student's Period 1.
For our Cohort O students in Grade 11 and 12, there will be a live session for online help scheduled for Thursday, April 22 from 10:00am – 2:00pm. A link to this MS Teams meeting will be posted in the Grade 11 and 12 course shells and in each student's Period 1.
During the live prep session, there will be opportunities to ask questions and receive clarification and feedback. We hope your child can join us on Teams during that session. They will not be missing any class time as their in-person classmates will be completing the same tasks here at Centennial.
If your child cannot join the live Teams meeting, the materials will be posted on Period 1 course shells. Students can review the material asynchronously and at their own pace. Regardless of how students access the material (synchronously or asynchronously), completing these activities will be very helpful in getting them ready to successfully complete the OSSLT.
For parents who would like to help their student prepare for the OSSLT, you may visit the EQAO website at www.EQAO.com to access information on the practice test.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Tammy Zonneveld or Marita Bootsma.
