French Immersion

This program opens the door to incredible opportunities for students! Participants will thrive in an environment where hard work leads to remarkable achievements, setting them up for long-term success and fostering positive experiences throughout high school. By completing the program, students will earn a prestigious French Immersion certificate, giving them a competitive edge in securing summer jobs and future career opportunities.

Students must complete 10 courses taught in the French language, including the four Français courses, to remain in the program and achieve their French Immersion certificate in grade 12.  We recommend that students take the grade 9 Arts visuels as their 10th credit.  Please visit the corresponding department for more information about the courses listed below.

Grade 9

These courses follow the same curriculum guidelines as the courses taught in the English language.

FAQ

Q:  Are there any applied-level courses in the French Immersion program?

A:  French Immersion courses are offered at the De-streamed, Applied and Academic level in grade 10 and at the University and Open level in grades 11 and 12.  


Q:  Is the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) in French or English?

A:  The OSSLT is given in English to French Immersion students.

Q:  How are the textbooks different from the English program?
A:  Most textbooks are the French version of the English Language textbook.  If the French version of the English textbook isn’t available, then an appropriate textbook will be used.

Q:  How are the exams different from the English exams?
A:  Every exam has to be approved by the Program Lead.  Some exams are the French version of the English Language exam, and others are very similar to the English Language exam.

Q:  Why do you decrease the number of French Immersion courses after grade 10?
A:  To receive a French Immersion certificate upon graduation, a student needs 10 French Immersion courses at the secondary level.  These are offered mostly in the first two years to allow students to better prepare for post-secondary education.

Q:  What are the advantages of the French Immersion program?
A:   In their grade 12 year, students can take the internationally recognized DELF exam, earning a certificate that is recognized worldwide.  For more information about the DELF click here.
