Languages are the key to unlocking a world of possibilities! In today’s multicultural society, learning a new language not only strengthens cognitive abilities but also opens doors to exciting global career opportunities and enriches travel experiences like never before.
Our Modern Languages department is here to guide students on this journey, offering practical, real-world instruction designed to inspire and empower. Beyond mastering speaking, listening, reading, and writing, students dive into the French and Italian cultures of Canada and the world, gaining a deeper appreciation for the diversity of languages.
But the adventure doesn’t stop there! From cultural field trips to immersive extracurricular activities, students have opportunities to bring their language skills to life in engaging and meaningful ways. The teachers in our Modern Languages department are committed to nurturing the growth and well-being of our students by providing instruction that is both practical and relevant to everyday life.
For students continuing their studies in Core French and French Immersion, there is an opportunity to take the DELF exam in Grade 12, which provides a globally recognized certification. FIF1D1|French Immersion (FI)

Get ready to level up your French! This course will boost your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, all through real-life situations. You’ll learn fun phrases to talk about travel, food, hobbies, and more, while exploring how French culture has influenced Asia and Africa. Picture chatting in French, introducing yourself, and sharing details about your life with confidence. The more you practice, the easier it gets to connect and express yourself!

FIF2D1|French Immersion (FI)
Get ready for a deep dive into French that will challenge you, spark your curiosity, and get you thinking in new ways! In this course, you’ll sharpen your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills as you explore fascinating and thought-provoking topics like mental health, French colonialism, and even the ins and outs of buying a car. Whether it’s diving into complex themes or figuring out how to navigate everyday conversations, you’ll gain the tools and confidence to tackle both familiar and unfamiliar situations in French!
FSF2D1|Core French
Building on the skills you picked up in Grade 9, get ready for even more French fun and adventure! You’ll level up your French, with increasing independence in everyday situations. Imagine chatting with friends about your weekend plans, describing your favorite foods, or talking about what you love to do—whether that’s sports, hobbies, or something else that lights you up. You’ll pick up awesome phrases and vocab to handle everything from travel mishaps to shopping dilemmas, and you’ll start feeling more confident navigating the French-speaking world.
LWIBO1|Introduction to Italian
Discover the beauty of a new language by learning Italian! In this course, you'll learn the essentials, from introducing yourself to discussing your interests and more. Research an Italian topic and share your findings with others, practice ordering at an Italian café or restaurant, and explore Italy's culture through films, food, festivals, and traditions. Join us for an engaging and enriching experience as you explore Italy's language and charm!
Grade 11
FIF3O1|French Immersion (FI)
This course lets you practice speaking and interacting in French through real-world situations for practical purposes. Improve your language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing while learning about French-speaking communities and culture via media, cinema, and research on French topics or inventions. The course builds a strong foundation for future language learning and practical skills for years to come that can be applied in the workplace and beyond. You will also continue to work on DELF preparation in the A2 and B1 levels.
FIF3U1|French Immersion (FI)
You will be working towards being a proficient user of the French language and explore topics such as current events, literature, and French culture around the world. You will be given opportunities to interact with fluency and spontaneity in everyday life situations and will also begin to work on using your French in professional and work-based environments. This year, you will take a larger step in text analysis and continue developing your essay-writing competencies to better prepare you for the independent novel study next year. You will also continue to work on DELF preparation in the B1 and now the B2 levels.
FSF3U1|Core French
Building on what you learned in Grade 10, this course will help you build your confidence, whether you’re navigating everyday situations or tackling some academic challenges! You’ll dive into exciting topics like Les Misérables, mental health, and French culture, while getting more comfortable sharing your opinions in French. Plus, you'll continue preparing for the DELF exam, moving from A2 to B1 level. It’s all about boosting your fluency and making French feel even more natural—so get ready to speak up and have some fun along the way!
LWICU1|Italian
Continue advancing your Italian skills by refining your conversational ability and expanding your vocabulary. You'll master more complex grammar and confidently discuss topics like past experiences, future plans, and cultural nuances. Explore Italy's regions, traditions, and dialects, and present your findings to the class. This next phase will enhance both your language proficiency and cultural knowledge.
Grade 12
FIF4O1|French Immersion (FI)
This course enhances your communication, critical thinking, and creative-thinking skills through the study of French, with practical applications for both work and daily life. Through a variety of interactive listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities, you'll build confidence and learn to collaborate in real-life situations. As you engage with both familiar and new contexts, you'll also explore the diversity of French-speaking communities and gain tools for lifelong language learning. Consider challenging yourself with the B1 or B2 level of the DELF exam.
FIF4U1|French Immersion (FI)
You are working towards being proficient users of the French language and exploring topics such as current events, French culture and deciding between living on or off campus. You will be given opportunities to interact with fluency and spontaneity in everyday life situations and also give your opinion on academic topics. You will be asked to write a clear, detailed research-based essay on an independent novel and write a formal letter to express your opinion. You are eligible and encouraged to write either the B1 or B2 level of the DELF.
FSF4U1|Core French
Get ready to unlock new levels of French fluency! In this course, you’ll gain even more confidence in everyday situations and some academic challenges. This course is all about giving you the tools to share and defend your opinions in French, whether it’s about your goals, your experiences, or your thoughts on the world. Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to take the DELF at A2, B1, or B2 levels—so why not aim high? Let’s make French both fun and practical, and get you feeling confident and ready to use it in real life!

This course enhances your Italian communication skills in both social and academic settings. Through engaging and interactive activities in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, you'll build confidence and develop the practical skills needed for effective communication and lifelong learning. Along the way, you'll also explore Italy’s rich cultural heritage and its global influence by researching an Italian-speaking region, deepening your understanding of the diverse communities where Italian is spoken. This course counts as a 4U course for University applications.
